THE “INHERITANCE” FOLDER: Data-recovery experts unlock a hidden folder on Tommaso’s computer

The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has repeatedly taken investigators into unexpected digital territory. Officials from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed earlier that computers, tablets, and storage devices belonging to people connected to the case were seized for forensic analysis.

One of the devices examined belonged to Nancy’s son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. According to investigators, the laptop initially appeared to contain nothing unusual. Most visible files consisted of ordinary documents, emails, and family photographs.

However, digital forensic specialists suspected that some information might have been deliberately hidden.

Using specialized recovery software, technicians began scanning the drive for deleted sectors, encrypted containers, and unindexed directories—areas where files can exist without appearing in normal system searches.

During this process, analysts reportedly discovered a CONCEALED DIRECTORY embedded within the file system.

The folder carried a single name:

“INHERITANCE.”

At first glance, the title appeared ordinary, possibly referring to legal paperwork or family estate documents. But the folder had been hidden using multiple layers of digital obfuscation, meaning it could not be opened through standard navigation.

After several hours of reconstruction work, the forensic team finally restored access.

Inside the directory were dozens of IMAGE FILES.

What investigators saw next immediately raised alarm.

The photographs did not show financial documents or legal files. Instead, many of the images appeared to be surveillance-style pictures taken from a distance.

Several of the photos showed Nancy’s home.

Different angles of the driveway.

The front entrance.

Windows facing the garden.

Even the narrow path leading toward the back of the property.

Each image appeared to have been taken at different times of day.

Some photographs showed Nancy herself walking through the yard, watering plants, or retrieving mail near the front gate. In several frames, she appeared unaware that she was being photographed.

Detectives reviewing the images noticed another disturbing detail.

Many of the photos included MARKINGS.

Small digital circles, arrows, and time annotations had been added to highlight specific areas around the house—entry points, blind spots in lighting, and locations where someone could approach the building without being easily seen.

When investigators realized what they were looking at, the atmosphere inside the forensic lab reportedly changed instantly.

These were not casual photographs.

They resembled RECONNAISSANCE IMAGES.

The type sometimes used when someone studies a location before carrying out a planned operation.

According to officials familiar with the moment, the findings were quickly presented to Sheriff Chris Nanos during a closed briefing.

After reviewing several of the images on a monitor, Nanos reportedly leaned back in silence for several seconds.

Then he spoke a sentence that would later be repeated among investigators working the case.

“This wasn’t random,” he said.

“This was a PLANNED MANHUNT.”

Authorities have not yet confirmed who originally captured the photographs or when they were taken. Digital timestamps embedded in the files are now being examined to determine whether the images were created days, weeks, or even months before Nancy disappeared.

Investigators are also analyzing the camera metadata to identify the device used to capture the pictures. That information could help determine whether the photographs came from a smartphone, a professional camera, or another recording device.

For detectives trying to reconstruct the timeline of events surrounding Nancy’s disappearance, the hidden “INHERITANCE” FOLDER may represent one of the most revealing discoveries yet.

If the images were indeed part of a coordinated surveillance effort, they could demonstrate that the person responsible for targeting Nancy had been studying her movements long before the night she vanished.

And for investigators inside the sheriff’s department, that possibility suggests something deeply unsettling.

Someone had been watching.

Planning.

Waiting.
